This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This is insane, our administration is supporting American terrorists with our tax dollars. This merits more than a fine from the State Department.  What would be the punishment if the situation was reversed and Iraqis were smuggling weapons here in this manner?

Blackwater is domestic enemy #1.  They are the hope for the christian fundamentalists to establish a military theocracy in the U.S. and we're supporting them with our tax dollars.  WTF?!

Did you see that their contracts went from 3 million to 500 million in under four years?   I don't like arming these pseudo-christian fools and murder lovers, I don't like it one bit.

ftm,

I know you as relentlessly well informed so I can't tell if you're being funny.  Blackwater has a real in with the righties - they are a Christian fundamentalist private army being supported by our tax dollars.  Being "Christian" they are also murder-lovers, their contracts with the gov't have skyrocketed, along with KBR, during the Iraw war.

I don't like my taxes funding someone's religious belief.

I don't like my taxes funding psychopaths who love killing, unless those psychopaths are the proud members of the U.S. military and, theefore, accountable to the citizenry.

follow the money - Blackwater is no secret and has been very busy with government contracts - you can even apply for a job with them online... if you have mercenary tendencies, har har.  Regarding those silencers as the quote in the article says:

"The only reason you need a silencer is if you want to assassinate someone,"

Our tax dollars at work.  Ire has pointed out the religious aspect which is new to me and really creeps me out.  Mercenaries with guns who are religious fundamentalists...   hmmm sound a little like potential terrorists to me,  eh?

Good gawd, 500 million - WT big whopping F!

This also is the group that really scares me as a potential for terrorist activity in the U.S.  Just what the world needs, more Crusaders.  Funding them is an ugly policy, I cannot imagine what the founding fathers would think of this.  To simply fine them is an insult to decency.

If you shaved their CEO's head he'd look like Voldemort, Harry Potter's nemesis.

Sedna,

It's crazier than that.  A friend of mine is in the military and has been to Iraq 3 times.  He says the military personnel hate the contractors because the contractors get huge paychecks, the best equipment and can run away if they need to.

Now, tell me, who runs a "war" effort this way?  It's as if there's an intentional demoralizing of the troops so that there will be a push for privatization (the righties have done this with the public schools and prisons).  For me it's just sickening that we treat our citizen soldiers this way - and it come straight from the top.  As far as I'm concerned the current administration needs to be taken  to task for abusing the soldiers.

Sorry for the rant - mistreating service personnel really sticks in my craw -

Here's a good article on them (I seeded it awhile back under the same headline):  http://www.motherjones.com/mojoblog/archives/2007/10/5725_making_a_killin.html

And here's a lighthearted history, to make the facts more palatable, if that's possible: http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=107312&title=Why-We-Fight-for-Money

Please Ire, don't apologize for what you call a rant, I sincerely appreciate the education.  This is just apalling and needs to get more recognition in the press.  It is another crime that the Bush cabal needs to answer for.  I sure hope that there is some way the new administration will find a way to put an end to this. It's so wrong to treat our guys who are sacrificing their lives like a red-headed step child.

Privatization has been a big push with the Feds for a while.  I witnessed the trend when working for the US Forest Service. Field work that was done by Fed employees was beginning to be  contracted out to private companies. It wasn't any cheaper, but that "bought" data could sure be manipulated.

Thanks for the links - will go check 'em out  now...

I own that DVD  - one of the things that interested me was the truckers that were sent on runs.  They had nothing to haul but had to go through the steps so that KBR could collect cash.

Ire:  I found a link to this document on the Halliburton Watch website, it's the testimony of one of their drivers who lays out many problems, including the empty loads:

Driver Testimony

Halliburton Watch

You have probably seen the site but if not, check it out. Follow the money, I hope the real reasons are exposed some day and properly addressed.  Am hoping also that your nephew and all of the rest of our troops and corporate pawns can come home soon and safe.

ftm,

Yep - it's a good one to have on DVD.  Of course, in my neck of the woods I'm considered a "radical" for having it, so I don't broadcast it too much.  Another thing that's interesting is that there are so many good documentaries out there and so few people are willing to take the time to watch them...must cut into "Amerocan Idol" or something.

Sedna,

Thanks for the links - I read the testimony.  There's no way in H*** any organization would run their business that way unless it's to deliberately skew paperwork.  In that case we are talking about malfeasance, at the very least, and deliberate calculated corruption at the worst.  A friend I went to B-School with had worked for a time with Bechtel, and he told the class of just one instance where the organization he worked for was ordered to bury hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of good tools and equipment and write it up as a loss.  So they got money on the back end and money on the front for charging the government a premium for new tools and equipment.

Privatization is a bad, bad move and is promulgated by criminals.

I'm sorry they brought contractors to the forest service, I've always thought we needed to better support that organization.  Moneyed interests and short term thinking fools have the power and have other ideas.  These are the domestic enemies and thinking citizens everywhere need to start standing up to them.  Christ, we give KBR and Halliburton untold billions and yet we can't support our teachers, researchers or scientists...makes no sense to me.

One thing I do know for sure - the business mind is a cowardly, selfish, and corrupt mind.  Anything it does to "give back to the community" is an outright sham.  Add to the fact that most of that mindset are also "Christian" and one knows before the first word is spoken that their ideas are abject stupidity.

I have not seen the video, but will check it out.  Thanks for the lead, ftm.

On another Blackwater related seed I saw someone mention former Idaho senator Frank Church and thought I'd better read up on him.  Church was very concerned about the NSA and said in his concern  that:

I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision, so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return.

It seems to me that as we have worried about our Federal agencies and their activities, they've sold us out and raised a corporate monster.  Of course the current administration certainly facilitated this leap into the abyss by posing as proper supervision while maintaining very bad intentions.  Greed is as unrelenting a force as gravity and power is its method.  Extreme fundamentalist religions fuel both.

Regarding a different U.S. military action Church also said:

The gathering crisis in our own land, the deepening divisions among our people, the festering, unattended problems here at home, bear far more importantly on the future of our Republic than anything we ever had at stake in Indochina

Substitute Iraq for Indochina and you have America today.

Organizations like Blackwater need to be exposed and dismantled - as far as I'm concerned they are a criminal enterprise and serve no useful function.

I so hate the privatization push and the false arguments behind it.

It sounds like the Blackwater honchos are raking it in while trashing some of their own boys, too.  A very tangled and ugly web that needs to stop,  Talk about organized crime.

Here's to a safe return home for all of our soldiers and an end to the contractor-vultures free for all.
